Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator)

One of the few occasions when you can get close enough to the Emperor dragonfly is when she is ovipositing. This one is doing so in one of the rather dirty ponds in the Earnley Concourse gardens. I have digitally removed some of the muck floating on the water. In both photographs you can see how she lowers her abdomen under the water to lay eggs on the stems of water plants.

I prefer the upper picure which, although almost a silhouette, is a stronger composition. If only that froth wasn't there. When I get around to it, I'll try to remove it digitally.

I was lying propped on my elbows for an hour to get these shots, to the amusement of those who saw me.

Both images: Olympus OM4Ti Zuiko 135mm macro lens. Exposure: 1/125 second at f8. Film: Provia 100F
