Hoverflies on Ragwort

Here are three photographs out of a whole roll that I took of this subject. A ragwort plant was lit by a shaft of sunlight through the trees at the perimeter of the Earnley gardens, and many hoverflies were actively feeding on it. I noticed how the bodies of the insects seemed to glow with the backlighting, and chose to photograph them in this way.

Notice in this image how the hairs on the insect's body have picked up pollen grains which catch the backlighting and shine like fibre optic tubes.

For all these pictures I took a spot meter reading off the flowers and set the shutter speed and aperture manually to that the meter was not influenced by the large amount of dark background (which would have led to overexposure).

In this image the translucent body of the hoverfly shines as though it is illuminated from within.
