I spent some time planning this picture by watching the behaviour of the goldeneyes. Just before they dive, they take on a particular body attitude for a fraction of a second before diving under the water. This behaviour was completely predictable and allowed me to anticipate the dive. I was particularly pleased with this result because of the way the eye, from the colour of which the bird gets its name, is reflected and surrounded by a ring of water drops, as shown in the detail picture below left.
