Grasshopper exuvium

This is the cast-off outer skin, or exuvium, of a grasshopper. The insects grow by periodically sloughing their old skin, and expanding the soft new skin underneath before it hardens. Note how even the smallest details are preserved in the old skin, including the antennae.

I wanted a fairly dark background for this picture, so I asked Ian to supply some shadow behind the subject with his hat.
