Kingley Vale

Kingley Vale is a National Nature Reserve which contains the finest yew wood in Europe. In the forest are ancient yew trees at least 500 years old, and densely-packed younger trees whose thick canopy shades out all other vegetation. Around the edges of the forest are rich communities of flowers, birds, insects and mammals.

There are about 20 very large yew trees at the core of the reserve, growing on the deep soil there. According to legend, a grove of yew trees was planted to commemorate the defeat of a band of marauding Vikings in AD859.
