West Dean gardens are located in the valley of the River Lavant and are surrounded by the broad sweep of the South Downs. There have been gardens here since at least 1622 when the original manor house was built. Some of the outstanding features are the Victorian walled garden with its beautifully restored greenhouses; the pergola and gazebo with its elaborate flint construction; and the sunken garden with its formal flower beds.
